Individual Study Track (IST)

IST
In IMD2, IMD3, and IMD4, you will participate in Individual Study Track (IST) classes on Wednesdays. ISTs are part of the academy-wide program at KABK. They allow you to take courses beyond the IMD curriculum, work with students from different years and departments, and tailor your education to your current interests. ISTs are also a good opportunity to take agency and curate your education by:
- Developing skills and knowledge not offered within IMD
- Enriching your skills and knowledge already covered within IMD.
- Or simply picking up a skill that you are curious about.
At the start of each semester, you can apply for an IST through the KABK portal. An IST Market is held at the beginning of the semester to help you explore options. You will also receive an email from the academy-wide team with important dates and instructions. Once your registration is processed, you must confirm your choice with your IST coach. If you make any changes (switching courses or dropping out), inform your IST coach as well.
You can find more information, including a detailed application procedure and list of classes, on the KABK portal here.
If you have questions not answered on the portal, contact your IST coach Ellen van den Assem (e.vandenassem@kabk.nl), or Josje Hattink (coordinatoracademywide@kabk.nl). For advice concerning the ISTs in relation to your study progress advice, contact your study coach.
Instead of the IST courses, you may opt instead for a self-initiated IST or take a Leiden elective.
Self-Initiated IST
If you wish to develop your own project, you may pursue a self-initiated IST. In order to apply, you must submit the IST form, a brief project description and a tentative weekly work plan to your IST coach at the beginning of the semester. Please note in your work plan that a self-initiated IST is worth 6ECs, meaning that your plan must account for approximately 28 hours of study time.
Your IST coach will discuss your learning goals and planning and sign the form. You must schedule:
- A mid-semester check-in, for which you prepare a written reflection and documentation on your process so far.
- An end-of-semester review , for which you present your work, submit a written reflection and documentation of your process.
You can find the IST form and more information about the self-initiated IST on the KABK portal here.
Leiden Electives
Thanks to the collaboration between KABK and Leiden University (ACPA), you can take Leiden electives instead of an IST.
To participate, you must register as a guest student. Being registered as a guest allows you to access schedules and detailed course overviews. Contact Rogier Schneemann at r.schneemann@kunsten.leidenuniv.nl.
Once you are registered, confirm your choice with your IST coach. At the end of the semester, submit a reflection to your IST coach.
